Bayern Deadline as Upamecano Faces Crunch Decision

Liverpool’s long-running admiration for Dayot Upamecano may soon reach a turning point, with Bayern Munich reportedly forcing the issue over the defender’s future in Germany.

The French centre-back is approaching a decisive phase of his Bayern career as his current contract moves into its final year. With no agreement yet in place, uncertainty continues to grow around whether he will remain in Munich beyond the short term — a situation that has not gone unnoticed at Anfield.

According to respected German journalist Christian Falk, Bayern’s patience is beginning to wear thin. Writing in his CF Bayern Insider column, Falk revealed that the Bundesliga champions have now drawn a clear line in the sand, demanding a swift answer from Upamecano regarding a contract extension.

Despite remaining a key part of Vincent Kompany’s plans following the managerial change, Bayern’s hierarchy are eager to avoid prolonged negotiations. They want clarity — and quickly.

Falk claims the club has issued a firm ultimatum, giving the defender until this weekend to make up his mind. That effectively leaves Upamecano with just 48 hours to decide whether to commit his future to Bayern or leave the door open to potential suitors elsewhere in Europe.

The journalist explained that Bayern are keen to avoid drifting into a scenario where the player could walk away for nothing next summer. With time running out, the pressure is now squarely on Upamecano to choose his next step.

This development is expected to alert several elite clubs, Liverpool included. The Reds have been closely tracking Upamecano’s situation for some time, particularly given their own contractual concerns at the heart of defence. Ibrahima Konaté, another French international, is also entering the final stretch of his Liverpool deal, which is due to expire in the summer of 2026.

Falk has previously pointed out the similarities between the situations facing both clubs, noting that Bayern and Liverpool could each risk losing a top defender on a free transfer if new agreements are not reached soon. Bayern, he suggests, have been trying for close to a year to secure Upamecano’s signature on a new deal — without success.

From Liverpool’s point of view, the need to reinforce defensively is becoming increasingly urgent. A previous attempt to land Marc Guéhi fell through after Crystal Palace refused to sanction a move, with the England defender later joining Manchester City. Combined with uncertainty over Konaté’s future and Virgil van Dijk entering the latter stages of his career, defensive recruitment is expected to be high on Liverpool’s agenda.

Upamecano could fit the profile of a long-term solution or elite replacement, though the club may still look to add further depth in central defence to fully safeguard the future of their back line.

With Bayern’s deadline looming, the next few days could prove pivotal — not just for Upamecano’s career, but also for how Liverpool shape their plans ahead of the summer transfer window. 🔴⚽
