Liverpool’s season under Arne Slot has hit its first major bump. After replacing Jurgen Klopp in 2024, the Dutch manager is now facing criticism—not only for his team’s performances, but also for some of the transfer decisions he signed off on.
One of the biggest talking points is Luis Díaz, who left Anfield for Bayern Munich. Under Slot, he played an important role as Liverpool stormed to the Premier League title last season, but in Germany he has climbed to an even higher level. His form abroad has only highlighted the dip seen in players like Cody Gakpo, Alexander Isak, and Mohamed Salah this term.
But Díaz isn’t the only regret. A quieter departure may prove far more costly.
The Tyler Morton Situation Raises Questions
Reports now suggest that Crystal Palace view Tyler Morton—who left Liverpool for Lyon in the summer—as a potential replacement for Adam Wharton, if the Eagles eventually lose their midfield gem.
Ironically, Liverpool themselves are among the clubs interested in Wharton.
Meaning: Morton left Anfield… and now Liverpool may spend huge money to sign someone with a similar profile.
At Palace, the belief is that Morton fits Wharton’s style: technically gifted, clever in tight spaces, and more reliant on intelligence than physicality.
So the big question is: why wasn’t Morton given more opportunities at Liverpool?
The 23-year-old managed only 14 senior appearances for the Reds—just five under Slot. With competition from Mac Allister, Gravenberch, Szoboszlai, Jones, and Endo, Morton found himself far down the list.
His move to Lyon has completely transformed his career. He’s already featured in 15 matches this season—five times more minutes than he played last year—and even delivered standout performances, including an excellent display against PSG.
It now leaves Liverpool fans wondering: if Morton was this talented, why did he have to leave?
Will Slot Handle Adam Wharton Differently?
Probably, but only because of the price tag.
It will take around £100 million to tempt Crystal Palace into selling Wharton.
Wharton—expected to be part of England’s 2026 World Cup squad—is clearly top-quality. But the logic of letting Morton leave, only to chase a near-identical midfielder for a massive fee, has caused serious debate among Liverpool supporters.
Fans Are Unhappy With Morton’s Exit
Many Liverpool fans have expressed frustration online. Some believe the club should simply bring Morton back instead of spending £100m on Wharton. Comments from supporters include:
“I’d take Morton back over paying £100m for Wharton.”
“Slot is letting young talent walk away for nothing.”
“How did we keep Endo but let Morton go?”
Others worry that Liverpool are repeating past mistakes:
letting an academy talent thrive elsewhere and then chasing a costly replacement.
