Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann has issued a blunt warning to Arne Slot, insisting the Reds boss must take a drastic step if he wants to survive the growing crisis at Anfield — and that step involves benching Mohamed Salah.
Liverpool’s Champions League nightmare deepened after a crushing 4–1 home defeat to PSV Eindhoven, marking their third straight loss by three goals and their ninth defeat in 12 matches — the club’s worst run in over seven decades. Anfield responded with loud boos, and questions over Slot’s future intensified despite his title-winning debut season.
The club spent £450m in the summer, but performances have collapsed, and Hamann believes continuing to rely on Salah could cost Slot his job. Once the perfect partnership, Slot and Salah are now surrounded by doubt as the Egyptian forward struggles to reach his usual elite standards.
Speaking to RTE Sport, Hamann didn’t hold back. He argued that even star players should not be exempt from being dropped, saying Slot now faces a defining choice: risk his job by persisting with Salah or leave him out to steady the team.
Hamann also slammed Salah’s defensive effort during PSV’s second goal, calling it “disgraceful” for a player of his stature. He suggested Slot had enough reason to substitute him immediately.
While Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté have also been heavily criticised for their defensive errors, Hamann insists Salah’s contribution — particularly off the ball — has been far below expectations.
Slot, meanwhile, acknowledged after the match that scrutiny over his job is “normal” given the club’s alarming form, but he maintained that his focus remains on improving the team rather than worrying about his future.
