Leoni, who recently earned his first call-up to the Italy senior squad, had been putting in a composed display at the heart of Liverpool’s defence before disaster struck. After challenging for the ball near the touchline, he landed badly and immediately signaled for medical help. Following a long delay, he was carried off and replaced by Milos Kerkez.
Speaking after the match, head coach Arne Slot admitted the situation looked concerning:
> “He was very down because it didn’t feel right straight away. These things usually need time to assess properly — we’ll have to wait until tomorrow and possibly do a scan to know the full extent.”
When asked whether it was a knee problem, Slot only hinted by saying: “It’s not his shoulder.”
The setback came on an otherwise positive night, as Liverpool secured their place in the next round with a 2-1 victory. Alexander Isak netted his first goal for the club, while Hugo Ekitike added another late on — though his joy quickly turned to frustration after he was sent off for removing his shirt in celebration.
Slot admitted it wasn’t Liverpool’s finest performance, but praised several individuals including Giorgi Mamardashvili, Federico Chiesa, and the unfortunate Leoni before his injury.
Liverpool will now turn their focus back to Premier League action, with a trip to Crystal Palace next on the schedule.
