Van Dijk didn’t hold back, calling the comments “lazy,” which sparked a back-and-forth between the two football icons — one that reached its peak at Anfield during Liverpool’s narrow 1–0 Champions League win over Real Madrid.
Speaking during his pre-match press conference, Slot made his stance crystal clear:
> “When you walk through the AXA Training Centre, you can hear him, you can feel that he’s our leader,” Slot said. “He’s been an outstanding captain — loud, influential, and respected by everyone around him.”
Slot also admitted that the criticism aimed at Van Dijk often stems from the exceptionally high standards he’s set for himself over the years:
> “He sets the bar at ten out of ten. When he plays at nine, people start questioning him. Maybe that’s actually a compliment.”
The Dutch coach acknowledged that while Van Dijk has made a few defensive errors this season, his consistency and leadership remain vital to Liverpool’s success.
