Former Liverpool midfielder Igor Biscan has poured cold water on speculation surrounding Arne Slot’s future, insisting the Dutchman should remain in charge despite the club’s troubled Premier League title defence. He also believes big-money signing Alexander Isak can still turn his fortunes around after a rough start at Anfield.
Liverpool’s hopes of retaining their crown have taken a huge blow following a disastrous run of six defeats in seven league matches — a slump capped off by a disappointing 3–0 defeat to relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest at Anfield.
The poor run has placed Slot under the spotlight, with bookmakers now ranking him among the top candidates to lose his job next, behind Leeds United’s Daniel Farke and Fulham boss Marco Silva.
But Biscan argues that Slot has already shown he’s capable of dealing with pressure since stepping into the role nearly two years after Jurgen Klopp’s departure.
“Pressure is part of the job at this level,” Biscan said. “But I don’t believe his position is under threat. What he achieved last season, given the chaos he inherited, was outstanding. Many doubted anyone could continue what Klopp had built.”
Biscan also addressed the long-running rumours linking former teammate Xabi Alonso with the Liverpool job. He believes Alonso could one day return to Anfield — but only if he continues his impressive rise in management.
“If he keeps delivering results and shaping teams the way he’s doing now, then of course the possibility is always there. Any club would want a coach with his structure, identity, and vision.”
Isak Backed to Come Good
Isak’s move from Newcastle United — a British-record £125m transfer — hasn’t yet paid off. Injuries have limited his sharpness and contributed to a run of just one goal in nine appearances.
But Biscan insists the Swedish striker still has everything required to succeed.
“At the start of the season, no manager or fanbase would have turned down the chance to sign him. He’s a top-level forward,” he said. “Missing pre-season affects rhythm and confidence. But his quality hasn’t disappeared.”
He noted that even club leaders like Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk have had periods of inconsistency, yet their underlying ability remains unquestioned.
“It’s just about finding momentum again. Once he starts scoring and the team settles, the whole story changes.”
