For the first time since joining Liverpool back in 2017, Andy Robertson has admitted he seriously thought about walking away from Anfield this summer.
The vice-captain, who has been one of the Reds’ most consistent players over the past eight years, revealed that the off-season forced him to reflect on his career path. Speaking to the Daily Record, Robertson explained that he and his family ultimately decided their hearts remain in Liverpool — and he has no regrets about that choice.
During the transfer window, the Scotland skipper was linked with a potential move to Atletico Madrid. In the end, though, it was Kostas Tsimikas who left on loan, while Liverpool splashed out £40m to sign Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth. The Hungarian defender has quickly cemented a place in Arne Slot’s starting XI, leaving Robertson with fewer minutes than usual at the start of this campaign.
Used to being an automatic starter, the 31-year-old has found himself adjusting to life on the bench more often. Yet he insists his decision to stay was the right one:
> “I had to really think about my future for the first time, but I know I can still play a lot of games for Liverpool and for Scotland if I keep working hard.”
Still a Key Figure at Anfield
Despite Kerkez’s emergence, Robertson’s importance to the squad remains clear. As vice-captain, his leadership and voice in the dressing room continue to be highly valued. With a wealth of experience — including lifting every major trophy under Jurgen Klopp and last season’s Premier League title with Slot — Robertson has plenty to offer the next generation of Reds.
Liverpool also strengthened their defence further this summer by adding Jeremie Frimpong and Giovanni Leoni, but Robertson’s influence on and off the pitch ensures he will still play a significant role as the season unfolds.
Looking ahead, the Scot has set his sights on more silverware and an appearance at the World Cup with his national team.
