Former Premier League midfielder Andy Reid has taken a swipe at Liverpool’s summer transfer decisions, claiming that the club’s massive spending spree has backfired and contributed to their shaky start to the season.

Despite investing more than $526 million on new arrivals, the Reds’ performances have failed to reflect the heavy outlay. Before last weekend’s 2–0 victory over Aston Villa, Arne Slot’s side had lost six of their last seven matches across all competitions — a run that left them seven points adrift of early leaders Arsenal.

Reid, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, didn’t mince words. He described Liverpool’s transfer planning as “misguided,” highlighting the sale of Luis Díaz to Bayern Munich for $85 million as a major blunder.

> “Liverpool spent a fortune, but if Slot wanted a bigger squad, they should’ve managed their budget better,” Reid argued. “Letting Díaz go was a big mistake — his pace, energy, and creativity are exactly what Liverpool are missing right now.”

Since moving to Bayern Munich, Díaz has hit the ground running with five goals and four assists in just eight Bundesliga appearances.

The Colombian wasn’t the only notable exit, with Trent Alexander-Arnold sealing a move to Real Madrid and Darwin Núñez joining a Saudi Arabian side.

Despite the turmoil, Liverpool showed signs of life after Mohamed Salah and Ryan Gravenberch scored in the crucial win over Aston Villa. Captain Virgil van Dijk later slammed what he called the “ridiculous criticism” of the team, urging patience as the Reds rebuild under Slot.

The pressure, however, remains on Michael Edwards and Liverpool’s recruitment team to prove that their expensive transfer policy can still deliver results. ⚽🔴
