With less than two days left before the transfer window closes, Liverpool could be set for a dramatic defensive shake-up. Reports suggest that while the Reds are working hard to bring in Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, one of their longest-serving players, Joe Gomez, is attracting strong interest from AC Milan.
Liverpool made an official bid of £35m for Guehi on Saturday, according to The Athletic. Palace, however, are pushing for an additional £5m in bonuses and a 10% sell-on clause before agreeing to let their captain leave. Negotiations are ongoing, but there’s a growing sense that the Premier League champions want the deal wrapped up quickly.
Meanwhile, Milan have identified Gomez as a serious target should they fail to land their preferred options elsewhere. The 28-year-old, who has been at Anfield for nearly a decade, is admired for his ability to cover multiple defensive positions—qualities that have caught the attention of the Rossoneri hierarchy.
Despite the interest, a move may not be straightforward. Gomez still has two years remaining on his Liverpool contract, and several English clubs are also keeping tabs on him. His game time has been limited under Arne Slot, who recently deployed Dominik Szoboszlai at right-back in the win over Newcastle, despite having Gomez available.
Slot has described the defender as having a “special” mindset for staying prepared despite limited opportunities. Still, with Conor Bradley now back from injury and Guehi potentially arriving, Gomez could face another season on the fringes at Anfield.
Liverpool’s stance may ultimately hinge on whether they can get Guehi over the line. If the Palace skipper arrives before Monday’s deadline, Gomez’s exit could become a real possibility. But if the Guehi deal collapses, Milan might have to wait until 2026 to revive their interest.
