Liverpool’s pursuit of Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak has hit a major roadblock — but a former Premier League chief believes there’s still a way to break the deadlock.
The Reds, managed by Arne Slot, have made the Swedish forward a top target this summer. However, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is reluctant to sanction a sale without securing a replacement, especially after rejecting Liverpool’s opening proposal earlier this month — a package worth around £120 million.
With the transfer window closing in, the likelihood of Isak switching to Anfield seems slim. But ex-Everton CEO Keith Wyness, who now runs a football consultancy, has suggested a strategy that could keep the deal alive: a cash-plus-player swap.
Speaking on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness claimed Newcastle still have gaps in their squad, while Liverpool possess surplus talent they could leverage.
> “If Liverpool really want him, they could offer £120m and include a player in return. That could get things moving,” Wyness explained. “Newcastle need to strengthen in several areas, and Liverpool have the depth to make this happen. This could be the one thing to break the stalemate.”
The drama could intensify when Liverpool travel to St James’ Park for their second game of the season — a clash that may fuel speculation over which shirt Isak will be wearing.
Wyness also criticised how the situation has been handled, suggesting Newcastle should take a firm public stance and remind supporters that no player is bigger than the club.
Meanwhile, separate reports indicate Liverpool are ready to listen to offers of around £20 million for 19-year-old winger Ben Doak. Leeds United and West Ham are both said to be monitoring the Scotland international, who is currently far down Slot’s pecking order and may need a move to secure regular Premier League minutes.
