Liverpool are on the brink of adding another defensive talent to their ranks, with reports suggesting that an agreement is nearly in place for Parma’s highly-rated youngster, Giovanni Leoni.
According to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, the 18-year-old centre-back is keen on making the switch to Anfield immediately, and discussions between the two clubs are at an advanced stage. Sources claim the Reds have already reached a full verbal agreement with the player, and the deal could be wrapped up within the next 24 hours.
This move comes as part of a defensive rebuild under Arne Slot, with Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi also on the radar. While Liverpool have strengthened at full-back through the signings of Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong, the centre-back department has looked thin since Jarell Quansah’s departure to Bayer Leverkusen.
Leoni, standing at 6′ 5″, made waves in Serie A last season with his calmness on the ball, ability to pick out passes, and dominance in aerial duels. Still, with just 17 senior appearances to his name, the young Italian is considered a long-term project rather than an immediate replacement for Virgil van Dijk.
