Liverpool’s hunt for a new striker has taken a hit, with Brentford’s prolific forward Yoane Wissa reportedly leaning towards joining Newcastle United over a move to Anfield.
Following Darwin Núñez’s exit to Al Hilal, the Premier League champions have been actively bolstering their squad, already adding Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez this summer. With just days before the new season kicks off, Arne Slot is still keen to secure a top-class goalscorer.
While Alexander Isak remains Liverpool’s prime target, Wissa had emerged as a strong alternative. The Congolese international netted an impressive 20 goals for Brentford last season, drawing interest from both Merseyside and Tyneside.
Wissa Chooses the Magpies
According to Sky Sports’ Keith Downie, Wissa has already verbally agreed personal terms with Newcastle and is not considering Liverpool’s late approach.
> “He’s made his mind up — Newcastle is where he wants to be,” Downie revealed. “There was some late interest from Liverpool, but I’m told it’s only Newcastle for Yoane Wissa. He’s desperate to play at St James’ Park and experience Champions League football next season.”
A Possible Silver Lining for Liverpool
While missing out on Wissa may disappoint Reds fans, it could work in Liverpool’s favour if it encourages Newcastle to soften their stance on selling Isak.
The Magpies have endured a difficult transfer window, losing targets like Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Šeško to Manchester United. Securing Wissa could help them shift focus while potentially opening the door for Isak negotiations.
As the final days of the window approach, all eyes will be on whether Wissa’s move to Newcastle is finalised — and whether Liverpool will respond with a bold late swoop for their main striker target.
