Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has issued what many are calling a clear message to the club’s owners, FSG, following their penalty shootout loss to Crystal Palace in the Community Shield.
The Reds, who also fell short in the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle just five months ago, twice surrendered the lead at Wembley despite debut goals from Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong.
Speaking after the match, Van Dijk didn’t hide his frustration. According to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, the Dutch defender admitted he “hates losing” and pointed out the need for a new forward in the wake of Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz’s departures. The remarks were interpreted by some as a push for the signing of Newcastle’s Alexander Isak.
While Arne Slot praised his side’s attacking play compared to last season, statistics showed Palace created more overall chances, even though Liverpool edged shots on target. Mo Salah had a subdued afternoon, while Ekitike missed opportunities to put the game beyond doubt.
Van Dijk himself conceded the penalty that led to Palace’s first goal, adding to concerns about Liverpool’s defensive depth. With Diogo Jota tragically lost in July and centre-back options running thin, the need for reinforcements in both attack and defence looks pressing if the Reds are to mount a strong Premier League title defence.
