Darwin Nunez’s chapter at Anfield is all but over, with a £46 million switch to Saudi Pro League champions Al-Hilal on the brink of completion. The Uruguayan striker, once signed amid huge expectations in 2023 after catching Jurgen Klopp’s eye at Benfica, experienced a rollercoaster spell on Merseyside — flashes of brilliance overshadowed by struggles in front of goal.
Since March’s 3-1 win over Southampton, Nunez hasn’t started a match under new boss Arne Slot, paving the way for his move to Saudi Arabia. But before even making his debut in blue, the 26-year-old could be hit with disappointment.
According to reports, Al-Hilal have been slapped with a ban from the 2026/27 Saudi Super Cup and fined 500,000 Riyals (£99k) after pulling out of this year’s edition. That means Nunez’s hopes of lifting early silverware in his new home have already taken a dent.
The reigning champions’ withdrawal is believed to be linked to their involvement in the recent Club World Cup in the United States, where they exited at the quarter-finals. Al-Ahli will now take their place in the four-team Super Cup, which also features Al-Nassr, Al-Ittihad, and Al-Qadsiah.
While the deal isn’t fully finalised, Slot has admitted the striker’s departure is likely — and Nunez will soon join fellow former Premier League stars Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo in Saudi Arabia.
