Liverpool have sent a bold statement to their Premier League rivals with an aggressive summer overhaul, while Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola appears to be shifting his approach after a trophyless campaign.

Last season marked a turning point in English football, with the Reds ending City’s four-year reign at the top by clinching the Premier League title. In contrast, City slipped to third place and endured their first season without silverware since Guardiola arrived in 2016.

Determined not to lose momentum, Liverpool have plunged deep into the transfer market. Backing new manager Arne Slot with serious funds, the Merseyside giants have already invested close to £270 million. Their arrivals include Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Freddie Woodman, and Armin Pecsi.

The club’s ambition doesn’t stop there. Financial analyst Stefan Borson recently suggested Liverpool still have room to spend, especially as they intensify efforts to land Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. The Swedish forward netted 27 goals and assisted six times last season, and he’s now pushing for a move away from St. James’ Park.

Insiders say Liverpool are increasingly confident of sealing the blockbuster transfer, with a formal bid expected soon. Newcastle have reportedly placed a £150 million valuation on the striker.

Over at Manchester City, Guardiola has been active but more measured in the market. The champions of old have brought in the likes of Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki, Marcus Bettinelli, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Sverre Nypan, and most recently, James Trafford—bringing their summer spending to around £153 million.

However, Guardiola has also issued a warning: he won’t tolerate an oversized squad moving forward. That stance appears to have shut down any late interest in Newcastle right-back Tino Livramento, despite earlier links. According to recent reports, City have completed their summer business with no plans for further additions.

Although both clubs have strengthened, Liverpool’s outlay has outpaced City by nearly £120 million—and that gap could grow if the Isak deal goes through.
