Newcastle Reportedly Increase Isak’s Asking Price Amid Liverpool Interest After Howe’s Surprising Comments

Newcastle United have reportedly raised their asking price for striker Alexander Isak, following speculation surrounding a potential move to Liverpool — and the figure has left fans stunned.

The 25-year-old Swedish forward was notably absent from the Magpies’ squad during their 4-0 pre-season defeat to Celtic in Glasgow, fueling further rumors about his future. While the club initially claimed his absence was due to ongoing efforts to manage his fitness amid a recurring groin issue, manager Eddie Howe later hinted that the real reason might be linked to the transfer noise.

Speaking after the game, Howe explained:
“It was my decision. He returned to Glasgow with us, but due to all the speculation, I thought it best to send him home. It wouldn’t have been right for him to sit in the stands under such circumstances.”

Despite the swirling rumors, Howe expressed confidence that Isak would remain a Magpie beyond the transfer window.
“We’ve talked, but that’s nothing unusual,” he added. “He’s trained well and shown great professionalism despite everything going on around him.”

Interestingly, The Telegraph later reported that Liverpool were prepared to offer £120 million for Isak. However, Newcastle are said to be holding firm on a much steeper valuation — a staggering £150 million — which surpasses the British transfer record set when Chelsea signed Enzo Fernandez from Benfica for £106 million in 2023.

This price hike has raised eyebrows across the football world, with many suspecting it might be a tactic to fend off suitors or simply a reflection of how highly the club rates Isak. Newcastle’s stance remains unchanged despite earlier reports suggesting they valued him at £120 million.

So far this summer, Newcastle’s only major signing has been winger Anthony Elanga, who joined from Nottingham Forest in a deal worth around £52 million.

Speaking on Isak’s importance to his squad, Howe didn’t hold back:
“We have a few players who are irreplaceable — and Alex is one of them. Talent like his is rare, and when you have it, you must protect it. We’re desperate to keep him here.”

He concluded by emphasizing Isak’s contentment at the club:
“He enjoys being at Newcastle. He has a great relationship with his teammates and the coaching staff. But in football, nothing is ever certain.”
