Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk was in a savage mood during a recent pre-season training session, and Joe Gomez felt the full force of it! Despite their close friendship, Van Dijk didn’t hold back when the duo went head-to-head in a quirky coordination challenge — and let’s just say, Gomez didn’t exactly come out on top! 

 In hilarious behind-the-scenes footage shared by Liverpool, the pair took turns trying to catch a falling stick. Gomez kept fumbling… and Van Dijk? He was loving it — teasing him relentlessly and even glancing cheekily at the camera mid-banter. Gomez, trying to keep his cool, warned: “This is on camera by the way.” 

But just when Gomez thought he’d get his revenge… Van Dijk caught every stick like a pro — smooth, calm, and ice-cold.  No redemption moment for Joe!

Don’t let the jokes fool you — these two go way back. From lifting the Premier League trophy together in 2020 to battling through injuries and intense competition, the Van Dijk-Gomez partnership is built on loyalty and trust ❤️.

Gomez has often spoken about Van Dijk’s leadership behind the scenes — especially since taking the captain’s armband in 2023. “He’s the best at what he does,” Gomez once said. “Probably the best the club has ever had in that position.” 

But in training? All’s fair in love, war… and stick-catching games!

⚠️ Did you know? Joe Gomez was close to leaving Liverpool last summer. After a rocky start under Arne Slot, he didn’t even feature in the league until late September. Just as he started gaining momentum, a hamstring injury hit — sidelining him for most of the season. 
