It appears Darwin Nunez’s time at Anfield may be drawing to a close, as Liverpool are reportedly open to offers for the striker — and Serie A giants Napoli are ready to pounce.

After smashing their club record with an £85 million move from Benfica in 2022, the Uruguayan forward hasn’t quite lived up to the hype. Under new boss Arne Slot, Nunez found himself on the fringes last season, starting only eight Premier League matches and scoring just seven goals across 47 appearances in all competitions.

Tensions reportedly rose earlier this year, with Slot expressing dissatisfaction with Nunez’s work ethic following a key miss against Aston Villa. Slot highlighted inconsistencies in the forward’s effort, noting flashes of brilliance — like a full-pitch sprint to score against Villa earlier in the season — but criticized the lack of consistent intensity.

Liverpool, now seemingly eager to part ways, have dropped their valuation. While they previously turned down a £70 million offer from Saudi side Al-Nassr in January, the Reds are now said to be entertaining bids in the region of €50 million (£42.7m), including add-ons.

Napoli, fresh off their fourth Serie A title and a managerial change under Antonio Conte, are understood to have submitted a proposal worth around €43 million (£37m). The Italian side is keen to bolster their frontline, particularly as Romelu Lukaku carried the bulk of the goalscoring load last season with 14 league goals.

With Victor Osimhen likely heading out — and interest from Manchester United circling — Napoli see Nunez as a strong attacking partner or alternative to Lukaku. Having already snapped up Kevin De Bruyne on a free, the Naples club appears serious about reinforcing ahead of their title defence.
