In a heartfelt announcement, former professional defender Steven Caulker has confirmed that he is retiring from football at the age of 33. Caulker shared the news on LinkedIn, bringing an end to a career that spanned nearly two decades and took him across five countries and 17 clubs.
Caulker’s journey in the game began at Tottenham Hotspur, where he came through the youth setup before progressing into senior football. Over the years, he had loan spells at Yeovil Town, Bristol City, and Swansea City, gaining valuable experience in the English leagues.
He then moved to Cardiff City in 2013, featuring in the Premier League for a full season, and later had spells with Queens Park Rangers, Southampton, and Liverpool — where he continued to demonstrate his versatility and defensive strength.
Caulker’s career also included significant time playing abroad. He turned out for clubs in Turkey like Alanyaspor, Fenerbahçe and Gaziantep, as well as stints in Spain and Iceland, showcasing his adaptability across different leagues and cultures.
On the international stage, Steven scored on his only senior appearance for England and later chose to represent Sierra Leone, where he earned 18 caps and captained the national team.

Rather than stepping away from the sport entirely, Caulker says he’s excited to shift his focus towards coaching and helping develop young talent — a new chapter he’s eager to embrace in 2026 and beyond.
