Liverpool have reportedly taken a huge step towards landing Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak — with personal terms said to be agreed weeks ago.
According to insights shared by former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, discussions with the 25-year-old’s representatives have already concluded successfully, leaving only the agreement between clubs to be finalised.
This transfer push comes hot on the heels of Darwin Núñez’s £46.3m move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. With both Núñez and Luis Díaz departing, the Reds now have the funds — and the squad space — to launch an official bid.
Reports suggest Liverpool are prepared to go all out, potentially smashing the British transfer record with an offer exceeding £120m for the Swedish international. Isak, who has made his desire to leave St James’ Park clear, is yet to rejoin Newcastle’s first-team training in an effort to secure his exit.
Newcastle had previously accused Liverpool of trying to unsettle the player when their interest became public last month, but sources now claim the Merseyside club are increasingly confident a deal will be struck before the window closes.
Robinson believes the transfer is now inevitable:
> “Liverpool were waiting for Díaz to go — he’s gone. They were waiting for Núñez to go — he’s gone. The wages have been agreed for weeks. I can’t see any other outcome than Isak becoming a Liverpool player, and it’s clear he wants the move too.”
Meanwhile, the Reds could also face late interest in midfielder Harvey Elliott. Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly eyeing the youngster as a potential replacement for James Maddison, who is sidelined with injury, while RB Leipzig remain in the hunt for his signature.
With just weeks left in the summer transfer window, Anfield could still see both high-profile arrivals and departures in what is turning into one of Liverpool’s most dramatic transfer periods in recent memory.
