Liverpool are reportedly planning to delay their pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guéhi until the summer transfer window, rather than pushing for a deal in January. The Reds believe waiting could be both strategically and financially smarter than making a mid-season move.
Guéhi, the 25-year-old England international and captain of Palace, has impressed with his consistent defensive displays and leadership. Liverpool have tracked him for some time, but sources suggest they see no urgency to accelerate negotiations during the current campaign.
One of the key reasons behind this cautious approach is Guéhi’s contract status — with his deal at Selhurst Park approaching its final year, waiting could strengthen Liverpool’s negotiating position and potentially reduce the overall cost. Palace, meanwhile, are reportedly keen to retain their captain for the rest of the season to maintain stability on and off the pitch.
From Liverpool’s point of view, their existing centre-back options — including Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté — give manager Arne Slot confidence that there’s no pressing need to disrupt the squad mid-season. Holding off until summer also lets them assess the broader transfer landscape and plan more thoroughly.
That strategy could even allow Liverpool to secure Guéhi on a free transfer later on, making patience a potentially rewarding choice.
