Former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey has voiced serious concerns over the Reds’ recent form, urging Arne Slot and his team to rediscover the fundamentals that once made them unstoppable.
Liverpool’s hopes of defending their Premier League crown are hanging by a thread after suffering four straight league defeats, the latest being against Manchester United — a result that left fans and pundits stunned.
The Reds now sit four points behind leaders Arsenal, with defensive errors and late-game lapses costing them dearly in recent weeks. Three of their last defeats came in the final ten minutes, exposing what Heskey described as a “loss of solidity.”
Adding to the frustration, their Champions League ambitions also took a hit following a shock defeat to Galatasaray, and the upcoming clash against Brentford could prove decisive in their bid to stay within reach of the top spot.
Speaking exclusively to the Liverpool Echo via BetBrain, Heskey said he was taken aback by the team’s recent dip:
> “It’s surprising to see this kind of drop-off. They’re not creating enough, and defensively, it’s mistake after mistake. We used to see Liverpool control and finish games strongly — now they’re struggling to hold on,” he explained.
The former England international, who scored 60 goals in 223 games for the Reds, believes the solution lies in returning to the basics:
> “They need to go back to the drawing board. Focus on the fundamentals — defend properly, build from the back, and rebuild confidence. That’s how Liverpool always found success.”
Liverpool’s current run marks their first four-game losing streak in 11 years, a slump not seen since the Brendan Rodgers era.
Despite the alarming trend, Heskey doesn’t believe it’s a full-blown crisis yet — but he warned that the title race could slip away if the slide continues:
> “I wouldn’t call it a crisis,” he admitted, “but four defeats in a row is worrying. They’re no longer the hunters — they’re being hunted.”
With pressure mounting, all eyes now turn to Arne Slot and captain Virgil van Dijk to see whether they can rally the squad and bring back the resilience that once defined Liverpool’s glory days. 🔴🔥
