After more than two decades of living the football dream, a beloved former Liverpool midfielder has officially hung up his boots. At 36, Adam Lallana has stepped away from professional football — closing a chapter that spanned Premier League glory, European triumph, and heartfelt memories across three clubs.
Taking to Instagram to share the news, Lallana expressed his deep sense of pride and gratitude, saying he was “thankful for the journey” as he called time on a career that started and ended at Southampton — the club where it all began.
But it was at Liverpool where the England international truly reached his prime. Having made 178 appearances for the Reds since his 2014 switch from Southampton, Lallana notched 22 goals and 21 assists, helping the team capture some of the most prestigious trophies in football — including the 2019 UEFA Champions League and the historic 2019/20 Premier League title.
“Playing for one of the biggest clubs in world football and winning the biggest prizes — it doesn’t get better than that,” he wrote, clearly moved by his Anfield chapter.
Following his Liverpool exit, he continued to shine at Brighton, a club he described as “one of the happiest places” in his football life — and one that’s “smartly run with a powerful community connection.” It was there he formed a strong friendship with Alexis Mac Allister, a relationship that may have played a role in the Argentine’s eventual move to Merseyside.
Lallana’s farewell message also highlighted the people who stood by him — from managers and teammates to the fans and, most importantly, his family. “To Emily, our boys, and my parents… thank you for standing with me through every high and low,” he said.
Interestingly, in the twilight of his career, Lallana was quietly involved behind the scenes as Pep Guardiola reportedly sought his insights on Pep Lijnders before appointing Liverpool’s former assistant as his new right-hand man at Manchester City.
While his playing days are now over, Lallana leaves the game with his head held high — remembered not just for his technical quality and commitment, but for being part of a Liverpool side that brought the club back to the summit of world football.
